"Thirty six cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia admitted during the period from Jan 1960 to Aug. 1968 were studied clinically in the Department of Urology, Yonsei Medical College Hospital and following results were obtained. 1. During the period, 832 male cases hospitalized there were 36 cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia, giving a rate of 4. 3%. 2. Among 169 cases (13.6 %) of 50 years old or more, there were 36 cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia with a rate of 21. 3%. 3. The average age of the 36 patients was 69 years-the youngest patient was 54 years old and the oldest patient was 86 years old. 4. A gradual tendency of annual increase of the case is observed. 5. The average duration of symptoms upon admission to the hospital was 20.4 months. The presenting symptom is 25 cases (78. 1%) was dysuria, in 16 cases (50%) frequency, in 8 cases (25%) hematuria and is 7 cases (21. 8%) acute urinary retention. 6. In urinalysis, pyuria, either gross or microscopic, was recorded in 18 cases (56. 3%) and hematuria recorded in 15 cases (46. 6%). In blood chemistry, non-protein nitrogen determination found elevated in 13 cases with a rate of 40.6%. 7. The complication of benign prostatic hyperplasia were seen, urinary infection in 18 cases (56. 3 %), cardiovascular lesion in 13 cases (40. 6%), hypertension in 8 cases (25 %), diabetes mellitus in 4 cases (12. 5%) and secondary anemia in 4 cases (12. 5%). 8. The largest group of 28 cases was treated by suprapubic prostatectomy, 2 by transurethral resection and 2 by suprapubic cystostomy with trocar."
